1.2 SETUP
Read the entire Operation Manual before setting up the cross-trainer.
WHERE TO PLACE THE CROSS-TRAINER
Following all safety instructions in Section 1.1, move the cross-trainer to the location in which it will be used. See
Section 9, titled Specifications, for the dimensions of the footprint. Allow one foot (30.4 cm) of clearance in front of the
cross-trainer to allow for movement of the pedal levers. It should be easy to mount the cross-trainer from the side.
HOW TO STABILIZE THE CROSS-TRAINER
After placing the cross-trainer in position, check the unit's stability by attempting
to rock it in all directions. Any slight rocking indicates that the unit must be leveled.
Determine which foot is not resting completely on the floor. Loosen the jam nut (A)
with an open-end 17mm wrench, and rotate the stabilizing foot (B) to lower it. Verify
that the cross-trainer is stable, and repeat the adjustment as necessary until the
unit no longer rocks. Lock the adjustment by tightening the jam nut against the
stabilizer bar. It is extremely important that the stabilizing leg be correctly
adjusted for proper operation.
PLUG IN THE CROSS-TRAINER
The cross-trainer comes with a standard power supply for the U.S., or a power
supply with country-specific line cords.
Insert the power adapter jack (C) into the barrel plug on the back of the cross-
trainer. Then insert the power supply into the wall outlet. Make sure the cord is
routed so that it doesn't bind and will not be walked on.
Check that the console LEDs light up. If not, recheck the plug and wall
connections and make sure the wall outlet has power.

dismount the Cross-Trainer.
3.2 BIOMECHANICAL GUIDELINES
There are two exercise variations that can be performed on the Cross-Trainer. For each variation, it is important to follow
these general biomechanical guidelines as well as the specific instructions listed below.
GENERAL
• Feet should be in a comfortable position facing forward on the pedals so the knees move in a forward plane (not angled
inward or outward) and so the hips do not rotate outward.
• Keep back straight. Do not bend forward at the waist.
• Keep both feet on the pedals at all times.
• If desired, allow heels to slightly lift off the pedals during the motion.
• Do not lock knees during the workout. Keep them slightly bent throughout the motion.
FORWARD MOTION – TOTAL BODY
• Mount the Cross-Trainer facing forward
• Hands should be positioned comfortably on the moving handles such that the elbow creates a 90 degree angle when the
moving handlebar is rotated toward you
• Choose the desired workout profile and duration on the console
• Begin moving feet in a smooth forward pedaling motion by pushing top foot forward and pulling bottom foot backward
• Exercise at a speed that is comfortable for you
13

REVERSE MOTION – TOTAL BODY
• Mount the Cross-Trainer facing forward
• Hands should be positioned comfortably on the moving handles such that the elbow creates a 90 degree angle when
the moving handlebar is rotated toward you
• Choose the desired workout profile and duration on the console
• Begin moving feet in a smooth reverse pedaling motion by pulling top foot backward and pushing bottom foot forward
• Exercise at a speed that is comfortable for you
BRAKING RESISTANCE
The Life Fitness Cross-Trainer features speed-dependent braking resistance. For a set resistance level on the monitor, the resistance
increases with speed. The faster you go, the greater the resistance. The computer makes no adjustments to maintain the resistance
level based on your speed.

HEART SYNCTM EXERCISE PROGRAMS
4.1 WHY HEART SYNC WORKOUTS?
Research shows that maintaining a specific heart rate while exercising is the optimal way to monitor the intensity
of a workout and to achieve maximum results. That is the idea behind the Heart Sync approach to exercise.
Heart Sync workouts identify an exerciser's ideal heart rate range for burning fat or increasing cardiovascular fitness.
The values within the range depend on the workout.
NOTE: Consulting a fitness trainer is recommended for defining specific fitness goals and
designing a workout program.
The exercise bike features five exclusive workouts designed to take full advantage of the
benefits of Heart Sync exercise: FAT BURN, CARDIO, HEART RATE HILL, HEART RATE
INTERVAL, or EXTREME HEART RATE. For detailed information about these workouts,
see Section 5, titled The Workouts.
During one of these workouts, wear the wireless heart rate chest strap to enable the cross trainer’s
on-board computer to monitor the heart rate. The computer automatically adjusts the resistance
level to maintain the target heart rate* based on the actual heart rate. To change the target heart
rate during a workout, use the ARROW keys.
15

4.2 THE WIRELESS HEART RATE CHEST STRAP
The Cross-Trainer is equipped with wireless heart rate monitoring system in which electrodes, pressed against the skin,
transfer heart rate signals to the cross trainer console. These electrodes are attached to a wireless heart rate chest strap
that the user wears during the workout. The chest strap is included with the exercise bike.
See the diagram below for correct positioning of the strap. The electrodes (A), which are the two grooved surfaces on the
underside of the strap, must remain wet to transmit accurately the electrical impulses of the heart back to the receiver. Moisten
the electrodes. Then, secure the strap as high under the chest muscles as possible. The strap should be snug, but comfortable
enough to allow for normal breathing.
The transmitter strap delivers an optimal heart rate reading when the electrodes are in direct contact with skin. However, it also
functions properly through a thin layer of wet clothing.
If it becomes necessary to re-moisten the chest strap electrodes, grasp the center of the strap, pull it away from the chest
to expose the two electrodes, and moisten them.

THE WORKOUTS
5.1 WORKOUT OVERVIEWS
This section lists the cross trainer’s pre-programmed workouts. For more detailed information, see Section 5.2,
titled Using the Workouts.
QUICK START is the fastest way to begin exercising, and it bypasses the steps involved in selecting a specific
workout program. After the QUICK START key is pressed, a constant-level workout begins. The intensity level does
not change automatically.
HILL is an interval-training workout combining “hills” and “valleys” of different intensity levels, which is proven to provide
effective, time-efficient cardiovascular results.
RANDOM is an interval training workout of constantly changing intensity levels that occur in no regular pattern or progression.
MANUAL is a workout in which the intensity level does not change automatically.
SPORTS TRAINING is based on a random workout with smoother transitions between hills and valleys. This workout
simulates conditions experienced outdoors and is a true athletic challenge for all fitness levels. Whatever level you choose
defines the baseline (flat ground) for your workout. Any level above baseline simulates uphill conditions. Any level below
baseline simulates going downhill.
EZ RESISTANCE features a gradual, subtle increase in resistance, lowering perceived exertion. A peak in resistance
is followed by an equally subtle decrease in resistance.
FAT BURN is a low-intensity workout for burning the body’s fat reserves. The user must grasp the hand pulse sensors
or wear a wireless heart rate chest strap. The workout program automaticaly adjusts the intensity level, based on the
actual heart rate, to maintain the user’s heart rate at 65 percent of the theoretical maximum.
17

CARDIO is a higher intensity workout for more fit users, emphasizing cardiovascular benefits and maximum fat burning.
The user must grasp the hand pulse sensors or wear a wireless heart rate chest strap. The workout program
automatically adjusts the intensity level, based on the actual heart rate, to maintain the user’s heart rate at 80 percent
of the theoretical maximum.
HEART RATE HILL consists of three hills that target three heart rate goals: The first hill brings the heart rate to 90 percent of
the target rate. The second hill increases the rate to 95 percent. The third hill matches the target heart rate. The valley always
is defined as 85 percent of the target heart rate. The user must grasp the hand pulse sensors or wear a wireless heart rate
chest strap.
HEART RATE INTERVAL alternates between a hill, which brings the heart rate up to 100 percent of the target rate, and
a valley, which brings the heart rate down to 90 percent of the target heart rate. The user must grasp the hand pulse sensors
or wear a wireless chest strap.
EXTREME HEART RATE alternates between two target heart rate goals as quickly as possible. The effect is similar to that
of running sprints. The user must grasp the hand pulse sensors or wear a wireless heart rate chest strap.
MY WORKOUTS is not a workout program but a feature that allows the user to pre-set up to four workouts with personal
setup information, such as age, time duration, or level, and then store the workouts in the console memory. These workouts
are accessed with an ARROW key. See Section 5.4, titled My Workouts Personal Programs, for information on setting up
and using these workouts.
TOTAL BODY TRAINER This workout makes the most of the Life Fitness Cross-Trainer's total body workout capabilities
by leading the user through a varied workout that exercises all the major muscle groups. For an upper-body workout that
works all the muscles in the arms, the console directs the user to push and pull the handlebar arms at various times.
The console will also vary the workout between total body and lower-body-only workouts, during which the user rests his
or her hands on the stationary handlebar. To maximize a lower-body workout, forward and reverse motions and speeds
are alternated, working all the muscles in the legs during a single exercise session.
NOTE: This Cross-Trainer workout is a single resistance program. However, it can be made into a variable resistance workout
by first selecting the Hill, Manual, or Random program, and then pressing the Reverse Mode key on the
console after starting the workout.
18

LOWER BODY TRAINER To vary the Cross-Trainer exercise and maximize the lower-body workout, the lower body
trainer workout directs the user to use a forward motion for 3 minutes followed by backward motion for two minutes.
By making the most of the Life Fitness Cross-Trainer's forward and reverse feature, this program provides an effective
workout for the thighs, calves, hips and buttocks.
NOTE: This Cross-Trainer workout is a single resistance program. However, it can be made into a variable resistance workout
by first selecting the Hill, Manual, or Random program, and then pressing the Lower Body Trainer key on the
console after starting the workout.
5.2 USING THE WORKOUTS
Different workouts require different setup steps. See the chart titled Cross-Trainer Workout Set-up Steps, which
appears later in this section, for a quick glance at the steps for setting up any workout. This section provides details
on the steps themselves.

ENTERING AGE
When prompted by the MESSAGE CENTER to enter age, use the ARROW KEYS to increase or decrease the displayed
age to the correct value, and press ENTER.
The workout programs that set a target heart rate zone first calculate the user’s theoretical maximum heart rate by
subtracting the user’s age from the number 220. The programs then calculate the target zone as a percentage of the
theoretical maximum.
SELECTING THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL OR TARGET HEART RATE
For MANUAL, RANDOM, HILL, EZ RESISTANCE, SPORTS TRAINING, TOTAL BODY, and LOWER BODY,: After
a duration is entered, the MESSAGE CENTER flashes a default difficulty level of “1”, which is the easiest of the 20
difficulty levels. Press ENTER to accept the default. Or, to change the level, use the ARROW keys. Then, when the
desired level appears in the DATA WINDOW, press ENTER to accept the duration.
20

Each of the 20 difficulty levels corresponds to a range of resistance levels as seen in the table below. A resistance
level is applied to each individual interval within a workout profile. See Section 5.3, titled Workout Descriptions for
more information. While the workout is in progress, it is possible to change the difficulty level.

* This workout requires the user to grasp the hand pulse sensors or wear the wireless chest strap.
** Target Heart Rate (THR) is a percentage of the theoretical maximum. For example, a 40-year-old user's THR for the HEART RATE HILL workout is 144. This workout targets
80 percent of the maximum, so the equation would be (220-40)*.80=144. A 20-year-old user’s THR is 160, so the equation would be (220-20)*.80=160.
QUICK START
QUICK START is the fastest way to begin exercising, and it bypasses the steps of selecting a specific workout. The intensity
level for the workout is set automatically and remains the same unless manually changed. To change the level press the UP
or DOWN ARROW keys. If the CALORIES PER HOUR display is enabled, the MESSAGE CENTER displays ENTER WEIGHT,
which is required to calculate this ratio. Using the ARROW KEYS, increase or decrease the displayed weight to the correct value.
23

MANUAL
The MANUAL workout has no automatic resistance changes. While the workout is in progress, increase or lower
the intensity level as desired, using the arrow keys.
HILL
The HILL workout features intervals of intense aerobic activity separated
by intervals of lower-intensity. Interval training has been scientifically
demonstrated to yield greater cardiorespiratory improvement than
steady-pace training.
During the Hill workout the difficulty level of intervals increases gradually,
as the profile diagram below illustrates.
Each workout session includes the following phases:
1
Warm-up gradually brings the heart rate into the lower portion of the tar-
get heart rate zone, increasing respiration and blood flow to working
muscles.
2
3
Plateau increases the heart rate to bring it within the target zone. To check the heart rate grasp the handpulse
sensors or wear the wireless heart rate chest strap.
Interval Training is a series of hills and valleys. During this portion of the workout, the user is confronted with
a series of successively steeper hills, each separated from the next by a valley or recovery period. Again, check
the heart rate to ensure that it has remained within the target zone.
4
Cool-down allows the body to begin removing accumulated by-products of exercise, such as lactic acid, which build
up in muscles during a workout and contribute to muscle soreness.
Effort and recovery periods are simulated on the display console by columns of red lights in the workout Profile window.
Each column represents one interval and 20 intervals make up a workout. The columns move from right to left during
the workout. The higher the column, the higher the resistance. The intervals are all of equal length, and interval duration
depends on the overall duration of the workout.
24

1 to 9 minutes: Because workouts with durations of less than 10 minutes are insufficient for the HILL workout to complete
all four phases adequately, the profile is condensed at various stages.
10 to 19 minutes: The interval durations are initially set at 30 seconds for a 10-minute workout. For every additional minute of
workout duration intervals lengthen by three seconds. Thus, a 15-minute HILL workout features 20 intervals of 45 seconds each.
20 to 99 minutes: All intervals last 60 seconds. As minutes are added, additional hills and valleys are presented beyond the
initial four of the interval training phase. The additional hills and valleys will follow the form of the first four, dropping back down
to the level of the very first hill encountered and progressing in height every two minutes until the highest hill is reached again.
This process repeats until the end of the duration.
RANDOM
The RANDOM workout creates a terrain of hills and valleys that varies with each workout. More than one million different
patterns are possible.
SPORTS TRAINING WORKOUT
SPORTS TRAINING is based on a random workout with smoother transitions between hills and valleys. This workout
simulates conditions experienced outdoors and is a true athletic challenge for all fitness levels. Whatever level you choose
defines the baseline (flat ground) for your workout. Any level above baseline simulates uphill conditions. Any level below
baseline simulates going downhill.
EZ RESISTANCE
In this workout, the changes in resistance are extremely subtle, lowering perceived exertion. The changes in resistance also
are independent of the user’s pedaling speed. The cardiovascular workout is effective, efficient, and enjoyable at the same time.
EZ RESISTANCE Workout Profile

EZ Resistance Workout Profile

25
The workout consists of one hill. The user determines the height of the peak of this hill by selecting an intensity level during
the setup. The higher the level selected, the higher the intensity at the entry point, which is the beginning of the workout,
and the higher the intensity at the peak, which occurs after 75 percent of the workout is completed.
After the peak is reached, the resistance gradually returns to the same intensity level as the entry point. See the chart.
TOTAL BODY
LOWER BODY
LOWER BODY TRAINER To vary the Cross-Trainer exercise and maximize the lower-body workout, the Lower Body
workout directs the user to use a forward motion for five minutes followed by backward motion for two minutes. By making
the most of the Life Fitness Cross-Trainer's forward and reverse feature, this program provides an effective workout for
the thighs, calves, hips and buttocks.
NOTE: This Cross-Trainer workout is a single resistance program. However, it can be made into a variable resistance workout
by first selecting the Hill, Manual, or Random program, and then pressing the Lower Body Trainer key on the
console after starting the workout.
26

FAT BURN
The FAT BURN workout is designed to maintain a user’s heart rate at 65 percent of the theoretical maximum ratefor
optimal results. Throughout the workout, the user grasps the hand pulse sensors or wears a wireless heart rate chest strap.
The console continuously monitors and displays the heart rate, adjusting the intensity level of the exercise bike to reach and
maintain the target*. This system eliminates over- and under-training, and it maximizes the aerobic benefits of exercise by
using the body's fat storage for fuel. The user must wear a wireless heart rate chest strap.
CARDIO
The CARDIO workout is virtually identical to FAT BURN; however the target heart rate is calculated at 80 percent of
the theoretical maximum. The higher target promotes cardiovascular improvement by placing a heavier workload on
the heart muscle. The user wear a wireless heart rate chest strap.
Defined by the American College of Sports Medicine's "Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription" as equal to 220 minus an individual’s age.
* Target Heart Rate (THR) is a percentage of the theoretical maximum. For example, a 40-year-old user's THR for the FAT BURN workout is 117. This workout targets 65 percent
of the maximum, so the equation would be (220-40)*.65=117. A 20-year-old user’s THR is 130, so the equation would be (220-20)*.65=130.
27

HEART RATE HILLTM WORKOUT
This workout consists of three hills that target three heart rate goals: The first hill brings the heart rate to 90 percent of the target
rate. The second hill increases the heart rate to 95 percent. The third hill matches the target heart rate. The valley always is defined
as 85 percent of the target heart rate. After a warm-up, the workout progresses toward the first hill and heart rate goal. Once the
user reaches 90 percent of the target heart rate, the hill continues for one minute. When the minute expires, the level decreases
into a valley. Once the user's heart rate falls to 85 percent of the target, the valley continues for one minute. Then, the next hill
begins with its corresponding heart rate goal. After the user completes the third hill/valley pair, the workout returns to the first hill
and repeats the cycle as long as the duration allows. See the chart below. The user must wear a wireless heart rate chest strap to
enable the computer to monitor the heart rate.

HEART RATE INTERVALTM WORKOUT
This workout alternates between a hill, which brings the heart rate up to the target rate*, and a valley, which brings the heart
rate down to 90 percent of the target. After a warm-up, the workout progresses toward the first hill and heart rate goal. Once
the goal is reached, the hill continues for three minutes. Then the level decreases into a valley. Once the 90 percent goal is
reached, the valley continues for three minutes, after which the next hill begins. The user's fitness level determines the number
of hills and valleys encountered within the duration. See the chart below. The user must wear a wireless heart rate chest strap
to enable the computer to monitor the heart rate.

EXTREME HEART RATETM WORKOUT
This intense, varied workout is designed to help more experienced users break through fitness improvement plateaus. The
workout alternates between two target heart rate goals as quickly as possible. The effect is similar to that of running sprints.
When setting up the workout, the user enters a target heart rate. After a warm-up, the intensity gradually increases until the
user reaches the 100 percent target heart rate goal. Then, that target rate is maintained for a stabilizing period. Afterward,
the intensity decreases. When the heart rate falls to the 75 percent goal, it is maintained for another stabilizing period. The
program repeats the alternating of intensity levels, continuing this pattern for the duration. See the chart below. The user
must wear a wireless heart rate chest strap to enable the computer to monitor the heart rate.

7.3 TROUBLESHOOTING THE WIRELESS HEART RATE CHEST STRAP
HEART RATE READING IS ERRATIC OR ABSENT ENTIRELY
Repeat the electrode moistening procedure on the chest strap. See Section 4.2, titled The Heart Rate Chest Strap
for details. The electrodes must remain wet to pick up and transmit accurate heart rate readings.
Make sure the electrodes are flat against the skin.
Wash the belt transmitter regularly with mild soap and water.
Make sure the chest strap transmitter is within three feet (91 centimeters) of the heart rate receiver.
The chest strap is battery-operated and will stop functioning when the battery runs out. Contact Customer
Support Services for instructions on how to have the chest strap replaced. See Section 7.5, titled
How to Obtain Product Service.
35

HEART RATE READING IS ERRATIC OR EXTREMELY HIGH
If the chest strap is worn near sources of electromagnetic signals, these signals may be strong enough to elevate
heart rate readings. Possible sources include:
Television sets and/or antennas, cell phones, computers, cars, high voltage power lines and motor driven
exercise equipment.
Another heart rate transmitter within three feet, or one meter, may also cause abnormal heart rate readings.
36
